Establishing the Research Group

The Seri Melenggang Research Group was established to address the fragmented nature of Negeri Sembilan history. We believe that the past is often preserved in isolated fragments—oral traditions, teromba, and colonial records—requiring a systematic effort to reconstruct the historical narrative.

Our mission is to bring these fragments together systematically. We prioritize evidence-based research, ensuring that every hypothesis is traceable to its source and that oral traditions are preserved without being treated as historical fact.

By documenting and analyzing these sources, we aim to contribute to a broader understanding of the historical memory of Seri Melenggang and the wider political formation of Negeri Sembilan.

Our Mission

To recover, document, analyse and preserve the historical memory of Seri Melenggang and contribute to a broader understanding of Negeri Sembilan history and Adat Perpatih.

Research Principles

Genealogy vs. Authority

We prioritize documented records and primary sources over speculative interpretations or oral traditions.

We treat oral history as a vital historical source, recognizing its value while maintaining rigorous academic standards.

We cross-reference independent sources to verify historical claims and identify patterns of consistency.

We document discrepancies and conflicting accounts to provide a transparent and honest record of our research.

We distinguish between hereditary genealogy, traditional political office, and the historical development of institutions.
